This EPC Update marked the 50th edition of the event series launched at the start of the pandemic to provide rapid, in-depth analysis of the latest developments in and around the EU. The Update took stock of the Union's response to the seismic events of the past three years. It also considered what lies ahead as the EU27 continue to wrestle with the far-reaching ramifications of these developments.
How effective has the response been to the geopolitical and geo-economic impact of the war, which began just as Europe was striving to recover from the economic effects of COVID-19? How are these developments influencing decisions on strategic priorities, the debate over whether now is the right moment to embark on fundamental EU reforms, the prospects for further EU enlargement and relations with key global partners? Looking ahead to the 2024 European elections, what impact might these developments have on the campaigns and outcomes in different member states? Could they help ensure Europe has the leadership needed to move on from more than a decade of permacrisis, or do they risk making this harder than ever?
