This EPC Update and Post-summit Briefing assessed the discussions and outcomes of the extraordinary meeting of the European Council on 30-31 May. The focus was on three main areas: security and defence, energy, and the ongoing war in Ukraine. What was decided at the summit and what are the next steps the EU should take in response to the Russian invasion? Did the extraordinary meeting of EU leaders help to overcome some of the divisions among the EU27? How can the implementation of the European response to the war be reinforced, and is there the political will to do so? In light of future potential challenges, how can European defence be strengthened, not just on paper but on the ground, through concrete actions? How can the EU's Defence Technological and Industrial Base be reinforced and deepened? What additional measures should be taken to ensure the security of energy supply in the Union – and again, is there the political will to go further?
