This 12th edition of the Conference Conversations followed the official close of the Conference on the Future of Europe on 9 May 2022 and the presentation of the final report to the presidents of the three main EU institutions.

Panellists discussed whether they see a future for the Conference and how the perspectives could look like in the months and years to come. How will the interinstitutional cooperation in taking the citizens' proposals forward continue? How has the Conference changed discussions on participatory democracy in the EU? Is there an institutional appetite to encourage more such exercises in participatory democracy to change the status quo? Can, and should, citizens be involved in EU decision-making on a more permanent or regular basis? What are the institutional perspectives on holding a Convention and possible treaty changes? And how can one make sure that the Union will reform itself in light of the new era we live in since the war of aggression against Ukraine?

Speakers included: Colin Scicluna, Head of Cabinet of Vice-President Dubravka Šuica, European Commission; Daniel Freund, Member of the European Parliament Delegation to the Conference on the Future of Europe; Dominik Hierlemann, Senior Expert, Bertelsmann Stiftung; Janis A. Emmanouilidis, Director of Studies, European Policy Centre. As always, the event was moderated by Jacki Davis, Meade Davis Communications

The Conference Conversations event series is part of the Conference Observatory, a joint initiative by an international consortium comprising the Bertelsmann Stiftung, the European Policy Centre, the King Baudouin Foundation, and the Stiftung Mercator. The Conference Observatory aims to observe, critically analyse and inspire the Conference deliberations. Based on the lessons learned, the initiative will also develop proposals aiming to improve the EU's future participatory and democratic architecture.
