At this Weekly Update, EPC Director of Studies Janis A. Emmanouilidis and EPC Chief Executive Fabian Zuleeg, shared their analysis of the latest developments at EU and member state level and Europe's response to the ongoing crisis.
This week the spotlight, once again, was on the need for a European fiscal solidarity package to counter the economic effects of the COVID-19 crisis and to support the economic recovery process. Following the failure of Tuesday's meeting of finance ministers to reach an agreement on a coordinated strategy after 16 hours of discussions, the Eurogroup will come together again on Thursday in an attempt to reconcile the divisions. Will they be able to strike a deal? What are the likely scenarios and what does this mean for European solidarity and the longer term future of the EU?
In addition, EPC Senior Policy Analyst Annika Hedberg assessed the likely impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the fight against climate change, following the postponement of COP-26 planned for November, and on the European Green Deal proposals.
