In the countries hit hardest by the coronavirus, Europe's faltering response to the pandemic turned into a wounding indictment of the continent's unity, accelerating feelings of Euroskepticism and prompting Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte to warn that the bloc faces a "real" risk of collapse.
