This online EPC Update focused on Ursula von der Leyen's fourth State of the Union speech, delivered in the European Parliament on 13 September 2023. The Commission President took stock of the achievements over the past year and set out her plans for the year ahead.
What are the key priorities for the current Commission's final 12 months? How can the EU continue its course towards a greener, fairer, and more digital Union while responding to the multiple consequences of the war in Ukraine, a changing geopolitical and geoeconomic environment, demographic developments, and the need to prepare for future enlargement? How will the Commission strengthen the Union's defence and (hard and economic) security capabilities? How will it shape the EU's long-term relationship with China and other strategic partners? What more might it do to promote European values and protect the rule of law? And, finally, what is the overall assessment of von der Leyen's performance after four years in office?
