EPC Update – The EU’s political landscape at this watershed moment

At this last EPC Update before the summer break, we discussed the EU's political landscape at this Zeitenwende sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the key challenges ahead. Can the unity shown at the beginning of the war be maintained, or will it crumble under growing disagreements and distrust between national capitals? To what extent is the war influencing national political developments? How weakened is President Macron at home, and how does this impact his role at the European level? Has criticism of Germany's response to the war undermined its leadership role and credibility within the EU? How will the future of Prime Minister Draghi affect Italy's position at the European level? How does Poland's frontline role influence the rule of law debate and the country's relationships with fellow member states? Will the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO change the debate on the future of the EU's foreign and defence policy? Will the EU–UK relationship become another significant issue for the Union, given the UK's unilateral and illegal actions on the Northern Ireland Protocol? What other longer-term challenges will the EU face, and what can we expect from the Czech Council Presidency?
