Conference Conversations – What’s the future of participatory democracy in the EU?

At this tenth edition of the Conference Conversations, moderated by Jacki Davis, Anna Lührmann, Minister of State, German Federal Foreign Office, Herman Van Rompuy, President Emeritus, European Council; President, European Policy Centre, Corina Stratulat, Senior Policy Analyst, European Policy Centre, Dominik Hierlemann, Senior Expert, Bertelsmann Stiftung, and Janis A. Emmanouilidis, Director of Studies, European Policy Centre discussed the future of participatory democracy in the EU.
They assessed the Conference on the Future of Europe so far and discussed the future of citizen participation in the EU, on the basis of a report published by the Conference Observatory's High-Level Advisory Group, co-chaired by Herman Van Rompuy and Brigid Laffan.
The panel dealt with a number of questions: What has worked in the Conference, what has not, and where do we go from here? What effect does Putin's war against Ukraine have on the overall significance and potential results of the Conference? Is there a readiness to introduce new institutionalised forms of citizen participation? In what ways could or should citizens be involved in EU policymaking in the future? Should their involvement be continuous or periodic, limited to key moments in the decision-making process?
The Conference Conversations event series is part of the Conference Observatory, a joint initiative by an international consortium comprising the Bertelsmann Stiftung, the European Policy Centre, the King Baudouin Foundation, and the Stiftung Mercator. The Conference Observatory aims to observe, critically analyse and inspire the Conference's deliberations. The initiative also develops proposals to improve the EU's future participatory and democratic architecture.
