At this special edition of EPC Update – moderated by Jacki Davis – EPC President Herman Van Rompuy, EPC Director of Studies Janis A. Emmanouilidis and EPC Chief Executive Fabian Zuleeg considered the current state of the European Union, and where the EU should be headed, in what promises to be another deeply challenging year for Europe and the world.
As the pandemic enters its third year, what lessons can we learn from the things that have united and divided us since the crisis began. How well equipped is the EU now to apply those lessons, both in continuing to respond to the COVID-19 challenge and in 'building back better'? What does the future hold? Can our economies bounce back from the years of crisis, and in a way that puts us firmly on the path to a low-carbon future? How can and should Europe's politicians respond to the growing cost of living crisis sparked by supply chain problems and rising energy prices, which threaten to exacerbate increasing inequalities and social tension? Is populism on the march or in retreat across Europe, and how concerned should we be now about the state of democracy and the rule of law in the Union? How should the EU respond to an increasingly challenging and volatile geopolitical environment?
Finally, and most crucially, our panel considered a fundamental question which could hold the key to all the others: what can and should be done to give European citizens renewed hope for the future after a turbulent decade in which the EU has been buffeted by one crisis after another? Can Europe find a way to turn the fears and insecurities this has generated into greater optimism for the future?
