This EPC Update and Post-summit Briefing assessed the discussions and outcomes of the meeting of the European Council on 20-21 October. The focus of the summit – and thus our Update – was on four main areas: the war in Ukraine, the energy crisis, economic issues, and external relations. What are the Union's next steps on Ukraine now that the situation has again escalated on the ground? Following the intense discussions at the informal Prague summit on 7 October, will EU leaders be able to strike a compromise on how to deal with the intensifying energy crisis? And how will the EU27 individually and collectively manage the upcoming recession and continuing inflationary pressures?

Speakers: Janis A. Emmanouilidis, Director of Studies, European Policy Centre; Fabian Zuleeg, Chief Executive, European Policy Centre;

Moderator: Jacki Davis, Senior Adviser, European Policy Centre
