At this EPC Update, moderated by Jacki Davis, EPC President and President Emeritus of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy, EPC Director of Studies Janis A. Emmanouilidis, and EPC Chief Executive Fabian Zuleeg discussed a number of questions related to the state of affairs in the European Union and the challenges and prospects ahead.
What is the current 'state of the Union'? After a torrid period when the EU faced a lot of criticism for its handling of the COVID crisis, the picture now looks brighter. But have the Union and the member states done enough to convince people that the EU is part of the solution (and not part of the problem)? It is now a year since what some called the Union's 'Hamiltonian moment' and money can now start flowing in the framework of NextGenerationEU. Reflecting on the developments which got us to this point, how important is this moment in the EU's history? Looking ahead, what are the most important challenges facing the Union in the coming year and the key opportunities the EU and its members will have to make a difference? Finally, what key themes should Commission President Ursula von der Leyen address in her second State of the Union speech in September?
