At this EPC Update, moderated by Jacki Davis, EPC Director of Studies Janis A. Emmanouilidis, EPC Senior Policy Analyst Amanda Paul, EPC Senior Policy Analyst & Head of European Politics and Institutions Programme, Corina Stratulat, and EPC Chief Executive Fabian Zuleeg discussed three topics: COVID-19 | COP26 | enlargement & EU neighbourhood.
At this Update, we discussed three core topics. Firstly, we took a look at the latest developments regarding COVID-19 and the impact that the increasing number of infections in many member states might have at the European and global level. Secondly, we analysed the state of negotiations and prospects for COP26, the U.N. climate change summit in Glasgow, from 31 October to 12 November. Thirdly, we addressed a number of questions related to enlargement and the EU's direct neighbourhood. Where do we stand with respect to the enlargement process after the latest EU-Western Balkans Summit? Has enlargement policy lost its transformative leverage and why is it proving so difficult to meet and sustain democratic standards in the Western Balkans? What is at stake if the EU and the member states do not deliver on their promises, and is it time to start discussing alternatives to full membership? What is the current state of EU-Turkey relations and what are the prospects for improving the relationship with Ankara? How is the EU responding to the increasing number of migrants and refugees coming to the EU via Belarus? Last but not least, what are the prospects for the current energy price crisis and what is the role of Russia in this context?
