At this EPC Update, moderated by Jacki Davis, EPC Director of Studies Janis A. Emmanouilidis, EPC Associated Director Ricardo Borges de Castro, EPC Senior Policy Analyst and Connecting Europe Project Leader Sophie Pornschlegel, and EPC Chief Executive Fabian Zuleeg dealt with four topics:
Firstly, they had a look at the latest developments regarding COVID-19. Where do we stand and what are the next steps in the fight against the multiple consequences related to the COVID-19 crisis? Secondly, they analysed the state of Brexit. What are the latest developments on the EU-UK relationship, including the continuing discussions around the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol? Thirdly, they discussed the outcome of the German federal elections and the likely consequences. Which coalitions are possible and what are the next steps in the formation of a new German government? What are the potential consequences of the elections from a European perspective? Finally, they examined the deal between the United States and Australia on the deployment of nuclear-powered submarines. How much strain has it put on the Western alliance and how is it affecting France, the EU and the future of NATO?
