El PPE, blanco de críticas del resto de partidos proeuropeos por mantener entre sus filas al líder populista húngaro Viktor Orban, debe intentar forjar una mayoría con los socialdemócratas, pero también con los liberales o los ecologistas. "El nuevo equilibrio de poder en la Eurocámara exige un candidato a presidente de la Comisión que pueda construir una mayoría sólida", dijeron en un comunicado los liberales, tercera fuerza con 109 eurodiputados (+40). La otra incógnita será el nivel de apoyo de los 9 mandatarios del PPE que se sientan en el Consejo Europeo y, especialmente, el de la canciller alemana, Angela Merkel, pese a que está previsto que reiteren su sostén a Weber antes de la cumbre.
