Der Europaexperte Janis Emmanouilidis von der Brüsseler Denkfabrik European Policy Centre hält es nicht für einen Zufall, dass neben Schulz noch weitere Europaabgeordnete für den Bundestag kandidieren: die FPD-Parlamentarier Alexander Graf Lambsdorff und Michael Theurer, der Linken-Politiker Fabio De Masi und die AfD-Vertreterin Beatrix von Storch. Das Thema Europa war in den vergangenen Jahren auf nationaler Ebene wesentlich präsenter, sagt Emmanouilidis.
