Voormalig Raadsvoorzitter Herman Van Rompuy is nu voorzitter van het European Policy Centre (EPC). Aan de vooravond van het twintigjarig bestaan van de invloedrijke Brusselse denktank kijkt hij samen met zijn Duits-Griekse directeur, Janis Emmanouilidis, bezorgd naar de toekomst van de EU. "Europa bevindt zich nu in zijn zwakst mogelijke positie, omdat de Europese identiteit niet goed genoeg verankerd is in onze mentaliteit. Van polycrisis evolueren we snel naar een existentiële crisis."
De EU davert op zijn grondvesten. En straks valt er met de Britten voor het eerst een invloedrijke lidstaat af...
Van Rompuy: Ik hoop dat we een akkoord sluiten met de Britten dat de Europese belangen en onze principes respecteert, dat het een akkoord zal worden van wederzijdse winst al zal er een lange, harde, onderhandeling volgen.
