Interview with vieuws after the European Council on 15/16 October 2015.
European leaders were determined to appear united over migration policy when they met in Brussels for a summit on 15th October that according to Janis A. Emmanouilidis of the European Policy Centre. In this post-summit briefing, he explains the talks centered on Turkey, which is hosting over 2 million refugees and has seen some 350,000 asylum seekers pass through its borders into the EU. Member states gave vague assurances of extra aid, sped-up visa liberalisation and an agreement to re-energise talks about Turkey joining the EU, in exchange for Turkeys cooperation in protecting EU borders. However, EU leaders refused to go into more detail.
Originally, the forthcoming British referendum on an EU exit was supposed to form a key part of the agenda. But with no official list of demands from David Cameron, there was little of substance to discuss.
