Gefahr von Euroskeptikern
Van Rompuy warnte vor einem akuten Anstieg euroskeptischer Wählerstimmen bei den Europawahlen im Mai 2014: "Es wird zwar eine große Mehrheit ins Parlament gewählt, die Europa nach vorne bringen möchte, aber ihre Arbeit wird erschwert." Pro-europäische Politiker müssten deshalb Stärke zeigen. "Wenn Politiker Wahlkampf machen und dabei für die EU kämpfen, dann sehe ich keine Probleme. Wenn sie es nicht tun, dann habe ich Angst vor dem Wahlergebnis", sagte van Rompuy.
Laut Experten wird der Einfluss von Euroskeptikern auf die Europawahlen überschätzt: [...] "Auch mit einem höheren Anteil von euroskeptischen Abgeordneten kann das Parlament ihre Arbeit fortsetzen", sagte Janis Emmanouilidis vom European Policy Centre (EPC). "Euroskeptiker sind nicht in der Lage, eine kohärente Gruppe im Parlament zu stellen."
