Leading UK MEP Andrew Duff says parliament is "enjoying" its sweeping new powers under the Lisbon treaty.

But, speaking on Wednesday, the ALDE deputy said that 12 months after the treaty was implemented parliament still lacks "popular legitimacy."

Duff said, "Post Lisbon, we are still awaiting a political class to emerge at European level. [...]

Janis Emmanouilidis, of the European Policy Centre, which organised the debate, said that expectations of the Lisbon treaty may have been artificially high and that this had helped fuel fresh criticism of the EU.
