The European Union is set to appoint its first President today in Brussels.

Tony Blair, alongside other present and former EU figureheads, is in the running for the top post created under the Lisbon Treaty. But the process through which candidates will be appointed has come under fire for its lack of transparency and democratic values. [...]

The job of EU Foreign Affairs representative is also up for grabs, though Britain's Foreign Secretary David Miliband has ruled himself out. Janis Emmanouilidis, of the European Policy Centre, said: "What member states have to decide first is if they are looking for someone who's able to represent the EU on a world stage, or someone who'd instead nurture policy quietly from within."
