On June 16/17, 2008, the US-European Working Group on Security and Defence met for the third time in Washington DC. The project jointly initiated and organized by the Bertelsmann Foundation and the RAND corporation aims to issue a policy-oriented report that identifies key issues of common concern in transatlantic relations and make jointly agreed recommendations on how to address these issues. The working group consists of leading American and European experts on international, transatlantic and European affairs.

At a working lunch Zbigniew Brzezinski gave a speech and discussed with the group the key issues and challenges of a US-European agenda after the U.S. presidential election.
